Today in Riga, the 36th anniversary of the restoration of Latvia's independence will be celebrated with an extensive cultural program, the Riga City Council's external communications department reported.
From 10:00 until the evening of the next day, at the Freedom Monument, every resident of Riga and guest of the city will be able to participate in creating a floral composition "Blooming Latvia," collectively forming a map of the country from flowers — a symbol of unity and mutual respect.
The solemn ceremony of laying flowers by state and municipal officials at the Freedom Monument will take place at 10:30, and at 12:00, a parade of brass bands from Latvian schools will be held at Freedom Square.
A bright and inspiring festive event "We Are All Together — in Latvia!" is planned in Vermanes Garden. From 12:00, the garden will transform into an educational and engaging space for the whole family.
Children and families will be able to acquire practical and eco-friendly skills — together with "Daces zaļumi," they will sow and grow greens, and in the workshop "I Create My Latvia!" they will learn to make natural plasticine and create symbols from it.
It will also be possible to learn how to care for nature and the environment together with "Komposts LV" and "Zero Waste Latvia."
Creative visitors will be able to express their imagination and work with color, creating images together with author and illustrator Ruta Briede.
For the youngest guests, there will be special light sand tables and developmental panels "House of Light and Sensations," as well as a paper crafts workshop "Good Happens," where beautiful crowns can be made.
Throughout the day, guests will be able to take photos and receive printed pictures with the inscription "My Latvia — My Responsibility."
In anticipation of the Ice Hockey World Championship, there will also be a sports section in the program — families and friends will be able to play table hockey and watch demonstrations by European and World Champion Edgars Caics.
From 12:00 to 14:40, children's groups — "Knīpas un Knauķi," "Kolibri," "Podziņas," "Momo," and "Poppy" — will perform on the stage of Vermanes Garden. At 15:00, the program will conclude with the theater performance "Lemonade" by the "Willa" theater, featuring poems and fairy tales by Inese Zandere, as well as songs by Jakabs Nimanis.
At the Town Hall Square, from 12:00, there will be a concert by folk groups "Kokle," "Skandinieki," "Vilkači," "Rīgas Danču klubs," and the chapel "Brička." The traditional procession in folk costumes will begin at 14:10 and conclude at 14:30 with the laying of flowers at the Freedom Monument and the performance of the song "Daugavas abas malas."
Throughout the day, the "Splendid Palace" cinema will host a marathon of Latvian cinema. From 13:00 to 23:00, Latvian films will be shown in two halls. Admission to the screenings is free.
A festive event "My Latvia — My Responsibility" will also take place at Freedom Square. From 15:00 to 22:00, guests will enjoy a diverse concert program.
The opening will be conducted by amateur artistic groups from Riga — the folk ensemble "Skandinieki," vocal ensemble "Kolibri," dance groups "Ačkups" and "Austris," the group "Dārdari," and the mixed choir named after Emīls Dārziņš. In the evening, Elza Rozentāle will perform with an ethno-jazz quartet and the post-folk group "Rikši."
The highlight of the evening will be the concert program "Spring. Eternal Youth" at 20:30 — a story about May 4 as spring not only in nature but also in the fate of the state.
Festive events will also take place in the districts of Riga. From 15:00 to 16:30, a concert "The Path, Breeze!" will be held at the VEF Cultural Center featuring the "Rīga" orchestra, the "Ave Sol" chamber choir, soloists Ieva Parša and Gundars Dzilums, as well as conductor Valdis Butāns.
At the "Imanta" cultural center at 16:00, a concert "Valodiņa" will take place with a program by Martins Kanters dedicated to the holiday.
At the "Ziemeļblāzma" cultural palace at 16:00, a concert "Rokam!" will feature the group "Ogas."
At the "Iļģuciems" cultural center at 19:00, a concert "Paraphrases of Dainas" will be performed by the trio of Aleksandra Špitzberga "AKA."
