"African swine fever poses a serious threat to Estonian pig farming, and preventing the spread of the virus requires joint efforts. The virus spreads not only through direct contact between animals but can also be transmitted through contaminated soil, feed, or dirt on shoes," said Kadri Kaugemand, head of the Food Safety Department of the Estonian Ministry of Rural Affairs and Agriculture.
As a result, this year the Estonian Defence Forces will be involved in monitoring African swine fever.
The involvement of the Defence Forces in monitoring is important, as during exercises, military personnel move through areas that are often inaccessible to people.
As part of the cooperation, participants were asked to be vigilant and report any fallen wild boars observed during the exercises to the Agricultural and Food Department (PTA), Baltic News Service reports.
