As a young man, he realized that he wanted to dedicate his life to God and went to a monastery. He began living in a desert monastery in Thrace (a historical region on the Balkan Peninsula). Theodore was very strict with his life. He never ceased fasting and wore only a prickly hair shirt (a rough garment made of goat's hair) against his bare skin. For this reason, he earned the nickname Trichina (the Hairy One). Later, this name was also given to the monastery where he labored.
Even during his lifetime, he was renowned for miracles. After his death, his relics remained incorrupt, and moreover — myrrh flowed from his body, which, when collected in vessels, healed many diseases and cast out unclean spirits.
