Dangerous landslide in Talsi region; road services have not addressed the consequences for months

A driver contacted the Bez Tabu editorial office, emphasizing that a dangerous road collapse has occurred in the Talsi region, on the road section from Sukuri to Sturiši.

"This situation has been here since last year. Maybe you can find out if they plan to repair anything here someday?" he wrote.

The Bez Tabu filming crew (TV3) went to the Talsi region. On one side of the road is a well-known burial place of the Talsi pastor and violinist Karlis Ferdinand Amenda, who is also considered a close friend of the legendary composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Meanwhile, on the left side is another local "attraction": a pit formed as a result of the landslide.

After interviewing passing residents, some expressed confusion as to why nothing has been done yet, meaning there are no signs of road repairs.

Signal posts along the cliff, speed limit signs before the winding section of the road, and a warning about the narrowing are the only things protecting road users from a potential accident.

Victor Kharitonov, an associate professor at the Faculty of Construction and Mechanical Engineering at Riga Technical University, emphasizes that this situation is extremely dangerous and should be addressed as soon as possible.

Continuing to use the damaged section of the road leads to additional pressure and vibrations from vehicles, including heavy machinery, which makes the situation even more dangerous.

In response to inquiries from the Talsi municipality, local authorities confirmed that the landslide is not new, but noted that this section is under the jurisdiction of "Latvijas valsts ceļi."

"In the first half of this year, temporary conservation work on the landslide is planned. This year, the development of a construction project for reconstruction will begin, including solutions for water drainage in the landslide area. It is currently unknown when construction work may start — it will depend on funding," responded Latvijas Valsts ceļi.

To avoid worsening the situation, the section near Sturiši is closed to heavy trucks, and the area is equipped with appropriate road signs on both sides, added the state joint-stock company.
