The Promenade for Millions — with Defects? The Builder Will Have to Address the Issues on Mukusalas in Riga

The construction company will have to address the identified deficiencies on the Mukusalas promenade in Riga, the Riga City Council informed the LETA agency.

The local government has been informed about the situation that has arisen. Today, a repeated inspection of the site will be conducted together with the builder, and with the start of the construction season, the identified deficiencies must be addressed.

Last weekend, several videos were circulated on social media, where politicians and bloggers pointed out the poorly executed work on the Mukusalas promenade: concrete was chipped by hand on the recently installed railings, and other problems were demonstrated.

Riga Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs stated on Twitter that a complaint regarding the quality of certain works was filed against the contractor last year.

The local government has instructed to rectify the identified deficiencies with the start of the construction season, the mayor reported.

As previously reported, on December 22 of last year, the Mukusalas promenade was commissioned. The two-year construction works cost 20.8 million euros.

The reconstruction of the promenade, which began in December 2023, is one of the largest investment projects of the Riga municipality aimed at renewing urban infrastructure to develop the Daugava promenade as a visually appealing and modern walkway.

The total funding for the strengthening of the Mukusalas promenade and the construction of related infrastructure amounted to 20.8 million euros excluding value-added tax. 85% of the expenses were financed through a loan from the State Treasury, while 15% came from the funds of the Riga municipality.
