Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, seven cases of unmanned aerial vehicles falling on the territory of Latvia have been recorded. Another drone was neutralized by NATO fighters participating in the mission to patrol the airspace of the Baltic states, the National Armed Forces reported.
The NAF emphasizes that for security reasons, detailed information about flight routes, technical specifications, and other details of such incidents is usually not disclosed.
Each case has been separately assessed and investigated by the responsible state institutions. At the same time, the military points out that there is no basis to automatically consider all unmanned aerial vehicles involved in such incidents as Ukrainian. Their origin is established only after conducting the appropriate checks and analysis.
According to the NAF, such incidents are directly related to the widespread use of electronic warfare by Russia during the war against Ukraine. The created GPS navigation interference and other electromagnetic impacts can disrupt the operation of drones and lead to their accidental deviation from course and crossing the borders of neighboring states.
This spring, residents of Latgale and Vidzeme repeatedly received warnings through the cellular alert system about potential threats in the airspace. Some drones subsequently fell and exploded.
In early June, in the Berzgale parish of the Rezekne region, French fighters participating in the NATO mission to protect the airspace of the Baltic states destroyed a foreign drone that had entered Latvian territory after being affected by Russian electronic warfare means.
