In Latvia, things often happen according to the saying 'they wanted the best, but it turned out as always'. They wanted to limit the presence of the Russian language on air, which is known to be a threat to the existence of the state in Latvia, but instead received a loudspeaker of propaganda from a neighboring state.
A disturbing message has appeared on the Reddit platform. One of the forum users published information that Belarusians are using the former frequency of Latvian Russian Radio 4 (LR4) for their purposes, including spreading propaganda.
"As expected, the closure of LR4 has become a 'gift' for friendly neighbors — since February, they have increased the power of their station transmitters and even started broadcasting news in Latvian with a propagandistic call to switch to those who lack information 'in their own language'.
This particular case is related to a Belarusian radio station broadcasting from a transmitter in Braslava (near Daugavpils). Now we can only wait to see when the Russians in Pskov will start using similar methods..." the publication states.
The Council for Electronic Media explained to the LA.lv portal that the reason the station's program is received at a great distance, especially towards Riga, is that after the cessation of LR4's broadcasting, a powerful local signal is no longer available in Riga, making it possible to receive distant stations. An additional factor is the good propagation of the radio signal in cold weather and the technical means used for quality reception.
Currently, a competition has been announced for the right to broadcast on the abandoned frequency.
