A large-scale scheme for selling fake artworks has been uncovered in the U.S. A family of Polish immigrants is accused of passing off forgeries as works by famous artists, including Andy Warhol, Banksy, and Pablo Picasso, for several years. According to the investigation, the perpetrators earned at least two million dollars from selling the fakes.

According to American media, the defendants in the case are a father and daughter living in the U.S. They sold paintings through auctions and private intermediaries, convincing buyers of the authenticity of the works. To do this, they used fake certificates, fictitious provenance documents, and invented stories of ownership of the artworks.

The investigation believes that the fraudulent scheme operated for several years. During this time, the fake paintings ended up with both private collectors and art dealers. Some works were sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The investigation was conducted by U.S. federal authorities, and the case is being heard in the Eastern District of New York.

During the court hearing, the defendants admitted their guilt and apologized to the victims. They now face prison sentences, large compensations to buyers, and possible deportation from the country after serving their sentences.

Experts note that the art market remains one of the most vulnerable areas for fraud. The high value of works, the difficulty of verifying provenance, and collectors' desire to acquire a "rare masterpiece" often create a favorable environment for fraudsters. This is especially true for works by artists whose pieces are worth tens of millions of dollars and regularly become objects of speculation.

In the editors' opinion, the story of the fake paintings once again shows how opaque the global art market can be. Even prominent names and impressive sums do not guarantee the authenticity of a work if buyers and intermediaries neglect thorough expertise.
