In Riga, in the Purvciems district, the police detained a pensioner for shooting at crows, reported the State Police of Latvia.
In the afternoon of May 8, the police received a call from residents of Purvciems who noticed a person shooting at local birds from the window of an apartment building. Presumably, one bird was killed.
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers discovered a dead crow near the house. The police found out from the residents which apartment the shooting was coming from.
In the apartment, police detained a 69-year-old man and seized a weapon from him, presumably a small-caliber air rifle. The man explained his actions by stating that he was disturbed by the cawing of the crows.
The police have initiated a criminal case for animal cruelty resulting in its death. For such a crime, the law provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to five years, short-term imprisonment, or probation supervision with the deprivation of the right to keep certain or any animals for up to five years.
Expert examinations have been appointed to secure evidence in the case. During the investigation, a preventive measure not related to imprisonment has been applied to the suspect.
