Latvia welcomes an increase in the number of American troops in the country. This was stated by the country's Foreign Minister Baiba Braže, as reported by Bloomberg.
"We are negotiating with our American allies, and they also say that we are a model ally," said Braže against the backdrop of reports about the withdrawal of U.S. Armed Forces from Germany, noting that Riga would be happy to see an increase in the number of American soldiers.
Baiba Braže is not the only one who wants to see more American military personnel in her country. Earlier, Poland and Lithuania offered to host new U.S. Army units on their territory.
U.S. President Donald Trump noted that he is considering options for relocating forces withdrawn from Germany. Trump also suggested that the U.S. might withdraw its military presence from Italy and Spain.
It became known from a statement by Donald Trump on May 3 that the U.S. would reduce its military contingent in Germany by more than 5,000 servicemen. "We are going to significantly reduce the number of military personnel and will cut it much more than by 5,000," Trump noted.
Pentagon officials explained to CBS News that this move is related to Donald Trump's dissatisfaction with the level of support that European allies provided to the U.S. in the war with Iran.
In Europe, according to a statement from the U.S. European Command (EUCOM), there are about 80,000 American servicemen. Of these, about 38,000 soldiers are in Germany on a permanent and rotational basis.
