Before the opening of the swimming season, water quality at the capital's beaches is rated as good, the LETA agency was informed by the external communications department of the Riga City Council, citing the results of tests conducted by the Scientific Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment 'Bior'.

Water quality has been tested at eight official swimming locations: Vakarbuļi, Daugavgrīva, Vecāki, Lake Babītes, the Daugava River at Lucavsala, Lucavsala Bay, Rumbula, and Kipsala, as well as the Bolderāja quarry. Swimming is permitted at all locations.

The Department of Housing and Environment of the Riga Municipality organized water quality monitoring in early May at 20 popular swimming spots among residents, and almost everywhere the test results were good. The water quality indicators are slightly worse at the popular Lake Gailēzers near Hippocrates Street opposite Sedas Street, where swimming is currently not recommended.

Swimming is allowed at all official swimming locations; however, the capital municipality reminds swimmers to exercise caution and safety in the water, as municipal police lifeguards will only be on duty starting from the opening of the official swimming season on May 15.

At the end of last year, the municipality completed the improvement of the popular recreational area at the Bolderāja quarry, where both the land and underwater parts have been tidied up. With the official swimming season approaching, the department continues to maintain the capital's beaches.
