In Latvia, security issues have always been relevant, but the latest news about the possible aggression of Russia against the Baltic countries makes us think again about how much information about threats is actually disclosed to us.
Maris Gulbis, an entrepreneur and Minister of the Interior (2002-2004), expressed his opinion on TV24's "Press Club" program that many security documents and reports are too classified, and he urges security services to be more open so that society understands the real risks and can adequately respond to potential challenges in the future.
Gulbis states that it may be necessary to lift the "classified status" from many documents and information, "what the Russians are actually planning against us," the entrepreneur says.
He mentions information released by foreign intelligence services that Russia may attack one of the Baltic countries within this and next year. "Our security services pretend that nothing is happening, they do not comment on anything, well, in the style of Soviet times," Gulbis says.
In his opinion, our security services should speak more openly about the challenges that await us in the near future.
"Just now, the head of the Ukrainian intelligence service, Budanov, said that the Russians have no deployment space, the only weak link is the territory of the Baltic countries," the entrepreneur says.
