In 2025, more than 26,000 people died in Latvia. At the same time, the number of deceased women was 15.4% higher than that of men, which is related to the significant predominance of women among the older age population.

Last year, 26,109 people died in Latvia — 552 fewer than the previous year. This data was published by the Central Statistical Bureau.

Among the deceased were 13,987 women and 12,122 men. Thus, the number of deceased women exceeded the number of deceased men by 1,865, or 15.4%.

At first glance, this difference may seem unusual; however, it reflects the age structure of the country's population. Women in Latvia live on average longer than men and make up the majority in older age groups.

At the beginning of 2026, the country had a population of 1.85 million people. Of these, nearly 988,500 were women and about 856,600 were men.

Age statistics show significant differences between the sexes. Among men, the highest number of deaths was registered in the age group of 70 to 74 years — 1,551 people died in that year.

Among women, the most numerous group was aged 85 to 89 years. Last year, 3,210 women of this age died.

These data once again confirm that women, on average, live to an older age than men. Therefore, the number of deaths among women is often concentrated in older age categories.

The statistics on the education level of the deceased are also interesting. The largest group consisted of people with general secondary or vocational education — 7,173 people.

Another 3,686 deceased had education no higher than primary school or did not complete full school education at all. Higher education was held by 2,501 deceased.

Despite the ongoing decline in population, the total number of deaths in Latvia has been gradually decreasing for the second consecutive year, although the demographic situation in the country remains challenging.
