The U.S. will significantly reduce aviation and fleet for NATO in Europe.
Washington will, in particular, redeploy a missile-armed submarine and an aircraft carrier to other locations. One of the two groups of strategic bombers will also be moved to another region, and the number of fighters in Europe will be reduced. This is reported by the New York Times, citing high-ranking European officials and a document sent to U.S. allies in early June.
The reductions will limit NATO's capabilities in terms of long-range reconnaissance, as well as its ability to strike targets in Russia with Tomahawk cruise missiles in the event of a possible conflict with Moscow, the newspaper clarifies, as reported by RTVI US.
The consequences of the reduction of the American military presence will be partially offset by the fact that European countries have already begun rearmament, realizing that dependence on the U.S. needs to be reduced, the article states.
