The passenger train between Tartu and Riga will start operating on January 12, announced board member of the Estonian national passenger train operator "Eesti Liinirongid" ("Elron") Mert Erenpreis.

Regular passenger trains between Tartu and Riga will be able to start operating after the European Union Railway Agency approved the use of three "Elron Stadler Flirt" diesel trains with two carriages on the Latvian railway infrastructure. "At least three sets are needed to ensure regular maintenance of the trains," said Erenpreis.

According to a board member of "Elron", the Tallinn-Tartu-Valga-Riga train will initially operate once a day.

"We will be able to open a second direct daily service after the [Estonian State Railways] "Eesti Raudtee" completes the infrastructure works and we can operate the new "Škoda" trains between Tallinn and Tartu," Erenpreis said.

"Elron" will serve the Tallinn-Tartu-Riga route in collaboration with the Latvian passenger train operator "Pasažieru vilciens" ("Vivi"). Latvian drivers will operate the "Elron" trains on the section between Valga and Riga.

According to the initial schedule, the train will depart from Tallinn at 14:50, from Tartu at 17:05, and arrive in Riga at 20:52. From Riga, the train will depart at 7:40, arrive in Tartu at 11:25, and in Tallinn at 14:11.
