On Thursday, a shipment of 30,000 tons of Russian mineral fertilizers, subject to sanctions, was sent from Latvia to Bangladesh. This cargo is a donation as part of the initiative of the UN World Food Programme, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) reported.
This is already the fifth batch of fertilizers from Russian enterprises that are under European Union (EU) sanctions, which were stored in Latvia.
The previous four shipments, totaling 130,000 tons, were sent to Kenya, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka in 2023 and 2024.
In December 2022, the Latvian government decided to respond to the UN's call to mitigate the negative consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine and to assist in addressing the food crisis in countries in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved the donation of fertilizers owned by sanctioned enterprises through the mediation of the UN World Food Programme.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that Latvia, together with foreign partners and international organizations, continues to provide support to countries affected by the food crisis due to the war unleashed by Russia.
