Regular consumption of sugary drinks is associated with increased anxiety.

Regular consumption of sugary drinks may be associated with increased anxiety symptoms in adolescents. This conclusion was reached by researchers from Bournemouth University after analyzing data from several previously published studies. The results of the review were published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics (JHND).

The authors examined studies that assessed the dietary habits and mental state of young people. This included carbonated drinks, energy drinks, sweet juices, syrups, sweetened tea and coffee, as well as flavored milk — that is, beverages high in sugar and low in nutritional value. All studies showed a consistent link between high consumption of such drinks and more pronounced anxiety symptoms.

At the same time, the scientists emphasize that the identified link does not prove that sugar itself causes anxiety disorders. An alternative scenario is also possible — anxious adolescents may be more likely to choose sugary drinks. Additionally, both indicators may be influenced by common factors, such as family environment or sleep disturbances.

Nevertheless, the researchers believe that the findings are important for prevention. In recent years, the level of anxiety disorders among adolescents has noticeably increased, and identifying modifiable lifestyle factors may help reduce risks.
