Stellantis has quietly begun to reintroduce diesel cars to the European market

The automotive group Stellantis, which owns the brands Fiat, Opel, Peugeot, and Citroën, has quietly begun to reintroduce diesel versions of a number of car models to the European market, Reuters reported.

The agency reports that the group has not publicly announced changes to its strategy, but starting from the end of 2025, it will again equip certain models with diesel engines.

This includes both vans – in particular the Citroën Berlingo – and compact cars, among which are the Peugeot 308 and Opel Astra, as well as premium models like the DS 4.

"We have decided to keep diesel engines in our portfolio, and in some cases – even expand the range of powertrains," Stellantis stated. The company clarified that it is focusing on customer demand.

Back in 2015, diesel cars accounted for at least half of new car sales in Europe, but after the 'dieselgate' scandal, their popularity began to decline rapidly. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, in 2025, diesel held only 7.7% of the new car market, while fully electric vehicles accounted for 19.5%.

Diesel vehicles are a segment where Chinese competitors specializing in electric cars are almost absent. Moreover, diesel versions are usually cheaper than electric cars – which is significant in the current challenging market situation.

Previously, Stellantis stated that by 2030, electric vehicles would account for 100% of the group's sales in Europe and 50% in the U.S., but demand in both markets has turned out to be weaker than expected.

Stellantis is the fifth largest car manufacturer in the world after Toyota Group, Volkswagen, Hyundai-Kia, and General Motors.
