A columnist for the Munich newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung warned: Trump's attempt to strengthen U.S. industry through tariff policy may have the opposite effect:

The tariffs he has already imposed create a distorted impression among American industry that international competition is, so to speak, a thing of the past. With the disappearance of requirements, the incentive to develop resource-saving technologies also vanishes.
