With the onset of cold weather in some regions of Latvia, including Northern Vidzeme, the ice fishing season has already begun, according to observations by the LETA agency.
The first anglers have tested the strength of the ice in the vicinity of Ruijiena. As usual, at the beginning of the season, fishermen venture onto the ice of small lakes and ponds, where in certain corners an ice cover has already formed that can support the weight of a person.
At the same time, fishing forums and closed groups are seeing an increasing number of reports about overly bold anglers who are trying to step onto the newly formed ice in other locations.
According to meteorologists' forecasts, the enjoyment of the first ice for the most daring fishermen will not last long — significant warming is expected this week.
The Riga municipality has already issued an order from the executive director prohibiting access to the ice within the municipality.
It is believed that ice can support the weight of a person if its thickness reaches at least five centimeters. It is also important to consider that the ice should be clear, without a snow cover.
When venturing onto the ice, it is essential to ensure your safety.
First, you must have an ice pick to check the thickness of the ice at every step.
Second, you need to have special spikes — so-called "claws" — to help you get back onto the ice in case of a fall.
Third, it is advisable to go onto the first ice not alone, but in a group — so that you can warn each other of danger and assist if necessary.
Finally, when heading onto the ice, it is recommended to take a sturdy rope or cord with you — in case someone needs help after falling through.
