José Antonio Domínguez Banderas was born in Málaga in southern Spain on August 10, 1960, to schoolteacher Ana Banderas Gallego (1933–2017) and José Domínguez Prieto (1920–2008), an officer of the Spanish Civil Guard. He has a younger brother, Francisco Javier. The actor took his mother's surname as his stage name.
