As reported by the president's advisor, Mārtiņš Drēgeris, on Thursday, Rinkēvičs visited the headquarters of the 1st Riga Brigade of Zemessardze and the 13th Infantry Battalion of the brigade at the National Armed Forces military base "Līnezeris."
During the visit, the brigade commander, Lieutenant Colonel Eriks Keisters, familiarized the president with the unit's area of responsibility, its structure, and tasks related to ensuring national defense.
Rinkēvičs also inspected the equipment and assessed the combat readiness of the medical and engineering companies, as well as the company for protection against weapons of mass destruction. Additionally, the president was briefed on the experience of these units in interacting with civilian institutions.
At the end of the visit, the head of state visited the 13th Infantry Battalion of Zemessardze, which is one of the largest units of the organization.
The 1st Riga Brigade of Zemessardze plays an important role in ensuring the defense of the capital of Latvia and strategically important state facilities located in its vicinity, the President of Latvia stated after the trip.
