Biologically active supplements cannot improve the functioning of the immune system, stated endocrinologist S. Khan. According to the doctor, the widespread belief in the benefits of such remedies is not supported, which he discussed in his Telegram channel.
The specialist noted that supplements with vitamin C and zinc do not affect the strengthening of immunity, nor do they reduce the risk of acute respiratory viral infections, nor do they protect the body from viruses. Moreover, zinc preparations can cause undesirable reactions — among them, the doctor mentioned nausea and the appearance of a metallic taste in the mouth.
Also, according to the endocrinologist, one should not expect a positive effect from taking eleutherococcus, ginseng, and echinacea. These remedies, as the specialist emphasized, do not improve the functioning of the immune system. He gave a similar assessment to immunostimulants, stating that their effectiveness lacks evidence.
The doctor also highlighted the very approach to "supporting" immunity. He emphasized that when the immune system is suppressed, stimulation is not required. On the contrary, excessive influence on the immune system can lead to negative consequences. The doctor pointed out that excessive stimulation increases the likelihood of developing autoimmune diseases, allergic reactions, and chronic inflammatory processes.
