The Louvre announced the restoration of the crown of Empress Eugenie. On October 19, 2025, thieves stole jewels worth $102 million from the museum, but lost the crown, encrusted with diamonds and emeralds, which was likely the main target of the theft.
While cutting the glass of the showcase with the jewels, the crown was seriously damaged: one of the arched bows broke off, four out of eight diamond-emerald palmettes were torn off, and the golden eagle went missing. The museum announced a public competition for the appointment of an accredited restorer.
The crown for Empress Eugenie was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III in 1855: it was intended for the World Exposition. It is one of three crowns of French rulers kept in France. In 1988, it became part of the Louvre's collection.
