IT expert explained how to save a liquid-damaged laptop

If a user accidentally spills a drink on a laptop, the device can be restored. First of all, it is necessary to immediately break the power circuit to prevent a short circuit. Then, turn off the laptop by holding the power button," explained Vladimir Zykov, head of the Association of Professional Users of Social Networks and Messengers.

According to the expert, immediately after the incident, you need to unplug the device from the socket and disconnect all external devices. After that, the laptop should be placed in a "tent" position, i.e., turned upside down so that the liquid can drain and not reach the motherboard. It is categorically forbidden to lay the device on its side, as the liquid may flow through the internal components.

"The key point is the battery. For older models with a removable battery, it should be removed immediately. But in modern laptops, the battery is built-in, and trying to open the case in a panic only worsens the situation," the specialist explained.

After the initial actions, it is recommended to dry the laptop. Contrary to popular advice, using a hairdryer or rice is not recommended: their effectiveness in restoring wet devices is a myth. The only reliable method is passive drying: leave the device in a "tent" position in a dry place for at least 48 hours.

However, even after this period, turning it on does not guarantee complete recovery. According to the specialist, there are risks of partial corrosion or damage to internal contacts due to residues of sugar or acids from the drink, which may lead to gradual device failure within a month or later.

Therefore, after such an incident, visiting a service center for professional cleaning is the only sure way to minimize the risk of subsequent device failure.
