In the afternoon and evening on Thursday, heavy thunderstorms will cover most of Latvia. Meteorologists warn of heavy rains, storm winds, large hail, and even possible tornadoes.
Residents of Latvia are warned of deteriorating weather conditions in the afternoon on Thursday. According to meteorologists' forecasts, an active cyclone will cover the country, bringing intense precipitation and dangerous storm phenomena.
The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has issued an orange warning, which will be in effect from noon until night.
The most challenging situation is expected outside of Kurzeme. Heavy rains, gusty winds, and hail are forecasted in many areas. In some places, hailstones may be large enough to cause damage to cars, agricultural crops, and property.
Meteorologists are particularly concerned about the risk of tornado formation. The European Storm Forecast Experiment indicates that the probability of tornadoes is elevated on Thursday.
The most dangerous areas are considered to be the eastern part of Zemgale, Selia, and Vidzeme. It is there that the most intense storm processes are expected. Thunderstorm clouds will move from south to north and northeast, gradually covering new territories.
The weather will remain unstable for most of the day. Even outside of thunderstorm zones, rain is expected, with heavy precipitation in some areas.
An additional feature will be a sharp temperature contrast. While temperatures in Kurzeme are expected to be only +10...+14 degrees Celsius in the afternoon, in Latgale, the air may warm up to +22...+27 degrees Celsius. Such fluctuations often contribute to the development of powerful storm systems.
What is important to know: during a thunderstorm, it is recommended to avoid open spaces, not to park cars under trees, and to refrain from traveling during the passage of the most intense storm fronts.
Rainy weather with thunderstorms is also expected in Riga. Meteorologists do not rule out heavy rains, hail, and stormy gusts of wind. Although the highest risk of dangerous phenomena is forecasted east of the capital, their occurrence in Riga cannot be completely ruled out.
As the cyclone approaches, atmospheric pressure will continue to drop, which is one of the signs of the impending deterioration of weather.
According to meteorologists' forecasts, the most dangerous weather phenomena are expected in the afternoon and evening, so residents are advised to closely monitor operational warnings.
