Before the onset of frost, work should be carried out on the country plot to prepare the plants for the next season, said agronomist S. Mikhaylova.
First of all, she recommended applying fertilizers containing potassium and phosphorus. They should be evenly distributed in the beds before digging, and in the garden, holes should be dug around the perimeter of the crown and the fertilizer should be poured in so that the nutrients reach the root zone.
Additionally, it is beneficial to apply fresh manure — over the winter it will decompose and become an excellent source of nutrition for the plants. In October, it is also advisable to prune trees and shrubs: at this time, the crowns are clearly visible, and due to the weather conditions, the wounds will have time to heal. It is recommended to carry out the work in dry, clear weather.
Moreover, the specialist advised sowing vegetables for winter in October. After sowing, the beds should be mulched with dry leaves or compost to protect the seeds during a low-snow winter.
It is important to note that nitrogen fertilizers should not be used during this period. They stimulate the growth of shoots that will not have time to mature before the cold and will die with the first frosts. Such fertilizers are better left for spring.
