It's His Own Fault: A Rushing Driver Crashed into a Tram on Ganibu Dambis

In the capital, Friday morning began with an accident caused by the driver's inattention.

Rushing to work and thinking about the cyclist he needed to avoid before the turn, the driver crashed into the first tram car, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).

On the Friday morning of March 27, a collision occurred between a tram and a Hyundai car on Ganibu Dambis street. The trams, moving on the rails, sustained minimal damage, and soon after the accident, the tram continued its route. The Hyundai, with a smashed front, remained at the scene, and its driver explained that his own inattention played a key role in the collision.

"The situation was such — I let the tram go ahead, it left. Continuing to move, I forgot about it. I was driving calmly in the left lane, there was a cyclist going at about 35 km/h, he had a road bike, I was looking at the speedometer. It turns out I was driving behind him, then I realized he was going, let's say, quite slowly — I had time to overtake him. At this point, I was already driving a bit faster, and then the tram appeared," the driver recalled.

The exit in front of the tram was not only an underestimation of the road situation but also a consequence of rushing — the driver was hurrying to work. The man noted that he had experienced similar emotions from accidents before.

"I called work, they were asking about the accident. I understand that I am to blame for such, let's say, an absurd, just absurd situation. I’m fine. Just, of course, the stress — that’s understandable. This is the first accident in more than 10 years," he clarified.

The damage to the car did not require a tow truck. The car remained operational and, as the driver promised, with the license plate placed behind the windshield and a broken bumper in the trunk, it made it to the nearest service.
