On Monday, the outskirts of Jelgava was illuminated by a red glow. A farm, where no livestock had been kept in recent years, was burning over an area of 1000 square meters.
Firefighters worked at the scene for six hours. It is still unclear what caused the fire; however, law enforcement agencies will investigate the circumstances. This was reported by the show Degpunktā (TV3).
Burnt boards from the roof beams collapsed chaotically inside the former cattle farm. The supporting structures were also damaged by fire, and it is dangerous to be inside the building as the structures could collapse at any moment.
The fire engulfed not only the building with an area of 1000 square meters but also destroyed an Audi car that was under the roof of the structure.
Velta, who worked for many years at the now-destroyed farm, has been struggling to cope with what happened both during and after the fire, as this place is associated with warm memories of the past. Her home is relatively close to the fire site, so the pensioner's nighttime peace was disturbed.
She saw the reflection of the fire in her home’s mirror and initially thought something was burning in the kitchen:
“I didn’t sleep all night, I was worried. I felt unwell with my heart. I drank water with sugar and did everything I could. The last fire truck left at 4:30, and only then, around five in the morning, did I go to bed and sleep for about two hours.”
The woman recounts that the building is managed by one of the local families. However, nothing has been happening there for a long time in everyday life. The property belongs to the municipality.
Velta suggests that the fire could have started due to a short circuit in the wiring. The State Police have initiated a criminal process since the true cause of the fire has not yet been established.
