Former Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov has died. He was 73 years old.

Ivanov was a retired Colonel General. From 2001 to 2007, he served as the Minister of Defense of Russia, and from 2011 to 2016, he headed the presidential administration.

In 2007, he was considered a possible successor to Dmitry Medvedev for the presidency of Russia. However, he ultimately yielded to Vladimir Putin.

He previously held several key positions, including Deputy Director of the FSB, Secretary of the Security Council, and Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian government.
