Former Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov has died at the age of 74, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov reported to journalists. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
Ivanov served as Minister of Defense from 2001 to 2007. Subsequently, he was Deputy and First Deputy Chairman of the Government, and from 2011 to 2016, he headed the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation.
Since 2016, he has been the Special Representative of the President for Environmental Protection, Ecology, and Transport.
In February 2026, President Vladimir Putin relieved Ivanov of his duties as Special Representative at his own request. However, he remained a permanent member of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.
