In Afghanistan, the Taliban has lowered the marriage age for girls from 16 to 9 years, reports The Times.

According to the decision, the minimum age is tied to the onset of sexual maturity. According to the largest and oldest Sunni school of Islamic law, the minimum age of sexual maturity is 9 years. It usually begins at the age of eight to thirteen years.

The silence of a girl after reaching sexual maturity is interpreted as consent to marriage.

The new law stipulates that girls who were married off before reaching sexual maturity can only exit the marriage through a Taliban court and only under certain conditions - if the guardians who married the girl off are deemed cruel, mentally deficient, or morally corrupt.

If a husband is abusive towards his wife, this is not grounds for divorce.
