The expert commented on Russia's "drone" rhetoric.
Russia's threats to the Baltic states on several platforms and formats, warnings from allies about provocations and attacks. All of this is happening at a time when Russia is conducting joint military maneuvers with Belarus. "This is a sufficiently successful propaganda campaign against the Baltics and, most likely, nothing more," said Armand Astukevich, a researcher at the Center for Eastern European Policy Studies, in an interview with Latvian TV.
"We can now clearly see that Russia has launched a coordinated psychological information operation against Latvia and all the Baltic states, as well as more broadly against NATO allies. And we can see this very clearly in connection with these statements from Russia's foreign intelligence, reinforced by various Russian officials," the expert continued.
"Currently, Russia does not have such a concentration of forces here in the region that it could confidently conduct this kind of military escalation, because we must take into account that Russia is very afraid, and the Russian leadership is very restrained from such risks of escalation, where NATO might possibly give a corresponding response, and for Russia, this could be, very possibly, even deadly for the regime," Astukevich speculated.
"But the fact that the drone incident led to the fall of the government makes Latvia more vulnerable, and this may be the reason why Moscow is particularly acting against us," the expert believes.
