The national meteorological service "Météo France" has issued a red alert level — the highest warning level for adverse weather conditions — in the departments of Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde, while an orange alert level has been declared in 13 other departments due to the risk of flooding.
Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes as a precaution, and 182,000 households were left without power after the severe storm, according to media reports.
The head of the monitoring and alert service "Vigicrues," Lucie Chadurun-Facon, stated on France Info radio that this is the first time in 20 years that warnings are simultaneously in effect for such a large number of rivers.
She described the geographical scale and duration of the floods as extraordinary.
