Washington Post CEO Announces Departure Amid Mass Layoffs

Washington Post CEO Will Lewis announced his departure from the newspaper. According to the WP journalists' union, this has been a long time coming amid mass staff layoffs. Earlier, the newspaper laid off a third of its staff, including 300 journalists.

"Will Lewis's departure has long been overdue. His legacy will be an attempt to destroy a great American journalistic institution. But it is not too late to save The Post. Jeff Bezos must immediately reverse these layoffs or sell the newspaper to someone who is willing to invest in its future," the union statement said.

Lewis himself thanked the publication's employees and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who owns WP, in his letter.

"During my time, difficult decisions were made to ensure a sustainable future for The Post and to allow it to publish quality, unbiased news daily for millions of readers for many years to come," CNN quoted him as saying.

According to WP, Chief Financial Officer Jeff D'Onofrio will assume the role of interim publisher and CEO.

Note: Former Dow Jones CEO and publisher of The Wall Street Journal Will Lewis was appointed CEO of the Washington Post in 2023. He succeeded Fred Ryan, who held the position for nearly ten years.
