Europeans can push back against the U.S. in the event of a Greenland takeover. The American side has several vulnerabilities that can be exploited, as suggested by The Economist.

In particular, the European Union may impose sanctions and tariffs, as well as annul the trade agreement made in August 2025, and strike at American tech giants, the publication writes.

The article clarifies that U.S. military bases in Europe could also serve as a certain lever of pressure. For example, without Ramstein in Germany and other facilities, Americans would no longer be able to 'project power' into Africa and the Middle East. Even the success of capturing the Venezuelan tanker on January 7 depended on bases in the United Kingdom.

European leaders may take advantage of another vulnerability of the U.S. — Arctic logistics. Controlling threats in the region requires close cooperation with Greenland, Iceland, the United Kingdom, and Norway.

The authors of the piece note that the EU should simultaneously implement a more aggressive economic approach while urgently increasing defense spending. They acknowledge that a new trade war will lead to 'huge pressure on budgets.'

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of tariffs against several EU countries as measures related to the situation surrounding Greenland. The situation will affect Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, as well as the United Kingdom and Norway, which are not part of the EU.
