Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is in prison, has chosen his son Flavio Bolsonaro as his political successor to lead the Brazilian conservative movement ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for next year, Flavio Bolsonaro himself announced on Friday, LETA reported citing AFP.

44-year-old senator Flavio Bolsonaro announced on social media that he intends to continue his father's political legacy, which has changed the political landscape of Brazil.

This statement means that Flavio plans to run in the presidential elections next year.

70-year-old Jair Bolsonaro is expected not to participate in the elections, as he has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup and is prohibited from holding public office. He is appealing this sentence and seeking a pardon from lawmakers.

The former president also has serious health issues, including complications from a knife wound in 2018 and recently diagnosed skin cancer.

Flavio is a "balanced politician, experienced and open to dialogue," said the leader of his far-right Liberal Party (PL) in the lower house of parliament, Luciano Zucco.

To win the presidential election, Flavio Bolsonaro will have to surpass other conservative candidates as well as leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has expressed willingness to run for a fourth term.
