The U.S. State Department sharply criticized the package of extensive economic reforms approved by the Cuban parliament. Washington believes that the changes are limited in nature and do not address the fundamental problems of the country.

The United States reacted negatively to Cuba's decision to implement the largest economic reforms in decades. The State Department stated that the announced changes are not capable of significantly altering the situation in the country.

"These gradual 'economic reforms' are modest, long overdue, and ultimately represent only a superficial smokescreen from the Cuban regime," said the State Department spokesperson.

The day before, the Cuban parliament approved about 200 reforms aimed at expanding market mechanisms in the economy. In particular, this includes allowing private banks, developing the real estate market, and enabling private and foreign investments in state enterprises.

These changes are considered the most extensive transformations of the Cuban economic model since the rise of the communist regime.

However, Washington believes that the reforms are insufficient.

"U.S. President Donald Trump continues to exert pressure for more substantial economic and political reforms that would make Cuba attractive for investment (...) and provide the Cuban people with the freedom, dignity, and opportunities they deserve," the State Department stated.

What is important to know: Cuba is experiencing one of the most severe economic crises in recent decades. The country's authorities hope that expanding opportunities for private business will help attract investment and stimulate economic growth.

Relations between Washington and Havana remain tense. After returning to the White House, Donald Trump resumed a policy of strict pressure on Cuba. In January, the U.S. blocked Venezuelan oil shipments to the island, exacerbating the economic difficulties faced by the Cuban authorities.

Washington is also applying additional pressure through other measures, including investigations and accusations against members of the Cuban leadership.

Despite the announced reforms, the U.S. has made it clear that it does not intend to soften its stance toward Havana without deeper economic and political changes.

Thus, Cuba's attempt to modernize its economy has not yet led to a reduction in tensions in relations with the United States, which continue to demand more extensive transformations.
