The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed concern on Wednesday regarding reports that in the Sudanese city of El Fasher, militants who seized the city killed more than 460 people in a maternity hospital, writes LETA, citing DPA.
"All patients, medical staff, and healthcare facilities must be protected under international humanitarian law," Tedros wrote on Wednesday on the social media platform X.
Over the weekend, the city in the Darfur region was seized by fighters from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to the Sudanese Doctors' Network, at least 1,500 unarmed civilians were killed while attempting to flee.
There are videos showing dozens of unarmed men shot dead.
Doctors accuse the RSF of genocide against non-Arab residents of the country.
Since April 2023, a bloody power struggle has been ongoing in this East African state between the de facto ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, who leads the RSF.
In El Fasher, which the RSF has besieged for over 500 days, about 300,000 civilians reside.
Experts criticize Western governments for not imposing sanctions on countries supporting the rebels, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The UAE denies any involvement in the conflict.
However, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing sources in U.S. intelligence, the UAE is supplying weapons to the RSF.
