According to a Datafolha survey commissioned by the Brazilian Forum on Public Security, criminal gangs and paramilitary mafia formations have expanded their presence in Brazil and now cover areas inhabited by at least 28.5 million people.
A survey conducted among 2007 respondents in 130 municipalities across all regions showed that 19% of the population lives in areas with organized crime, which is five percentage points higher than last year (14%).
This phenomenon is more common in state capitals, large cities, and the northeast of the country, affecting both low-income and high-income groups equally. The prevalence of this phenomenon is higher among Black Brazilians (23%) than among whites (13%).
