Quitting smoking reduces the risk of heart attack within the first day

Just 20 minutes after the last cigarette, the pulse normalizes.

Spanish doctor Ana Pérez Ballesta reported that positive changes in the body begin almost immediately after quitting smoking. Within just one day, the risk of heart attack decreases, and within 48 hours, the regeneration of nerve endings in the respiratory tract begins. This is reported by 20minutos.

According to the specialist, just 20 minutes after the last cigarette, the pulse normalizes and the load on the heart decreases. After 24 hours, the concentration of carbon monoxide in the blood is reduced by about half, and the level of oxygen increases, leading to a reduced risk of heart attack.

After two days, the nerve endings in the respiratory tract begin to recover, which improves the sense of smell and taste perception. In the following weeks, changes in lung function are observed: the cilia in the respiratory tract clean them more effectively, the frequency of infections decreases, and breathing becomes easier. The doctor notes that lung function can improve by about ten percent, which is especially important for people with bronchitis and other respiratory diseases.

In the long term, quitting smoking significantly reduces the risk of stroke, dementia, and a number of cancers. Although quitting smoking is not easy, the beneficial effects on the body begin almost immediately.
