Katie Berry and Mary Galliardi believe that even a kitchen with many drawers and cabinets requires careful organization so that its contents are used appropriately and do not pose a threat. Nevertheless, many kitchens contain items that should be thrown away.
Cookware with Damaged Non-Stick Coating
“Research shows that damaged non-stick coatings can release toxic chemicals that can seriously harm health. Therefore, using such cookware is not recommended, and it makes no sense to keep it, as it cannot be restored,” says Katie Berry.
Cookware with Chips and Cracks
Experts note that mugs with cracks and glassware with chips are quite common. These items can be dangerous: there have been cases where mugs with cracks shattered when hot tea was poured into them. The jagged edges on glassware can lead to cuts and scratches, reports the online publication MarthaStewart.com.
Excess Containers
Containers are an inexpensive and convenient way to store food. However, some of them may turn out to be unnecessary. They may be inconvenient or not meet the needs of a particular family. It is not worth keeping such containers, as well as those that are cracked or missing lids and other parts for various reasons.
Deformed Pots and Pans
“The problem with deformed pans is that they do not sit evenly on the burner, leading to uneven cooking. Additionally, cookware with an uneven bottom can cause hot food to accidentally spill. Repairing such cookware is often impossible or too expensive, so it’s better to replace it,” advises Katie Berry.
The expert also recommends getting rid of scratched or deformed cutting boards, both plastic and wooden. Bacteria accumulate in their scratches, and due to warping, the board may wobble, increasing the risk of cuts.
Kitchen Textiles
“Those who keep a stock of fabric napkins, towels, and tablecloths in the kitchen sometimes forget to check them for stains. It is necessary to assess how often they are used, in what condition they are, and whether there are too many of them,” says Mary Galliardi.
Cleaning experts also recommend removing all expired products from the refrigerator. In cabinets, it’s worth double-checking the expiration dates of food items and not using expired ingredients for cooking. Keeping stale dried herbs and spices is pointless. Their freshness can be assessed by smell: if the aroma is lost, such seasonings will not be beneficial for the dish.
