Underwater Robots for Mine Clearance: The U.S. Actively Demines the Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. Navy has launched a large-scale operation to clear the Strait of Hormuz of sea mines, deploying advanced underwater drones. This important step was reported by the influential newspaper The Wall Street Journal, highlighting the commitment to ensure the safety of global shipping.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. Navy is actively using underwater drones to clear the Strait of Hormuz of potentially dangerous sea mines. This information was confirmed on Sunday by a representative of the U.S. Department of Defense, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation and the intention to ensure safety.

The naval forces are employing a hybrid approach, combining manned and autonomous systems to detect hidden threats. The main task is to ensure the unobstructed movement of commercial vessels through this strategically important waterway, which sees up to one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passing through daily.

Military analysts note that unmanned underwater vehicles are capable of quickly conducting initial scans of the seabed. Once mines are accurately detected, specialized marine robots designed for their safe destruction and neutralization will come into play.

Unknown Threat Underwater

Earlier, representatives of the U.S. command emphasized that the exact number of sea mines laid in the Strait of Hormuz remains unknown. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has claimed to have mined the central part of the strait, traditionally used for international transit, raising serious concerns.
