It's Not the Toilet's Fault: NASA Explained the Problem on Board Orion

Reid Wiseman, the head of the Artemis 2 mission, dispelled myths surrounding the problems with the toilet on the Orion spacecraft, stating that the toilet itself worked flawlessly, and the malfunction lay in the waste disposal system.

Reid Wiseman, the commander of the Artemis 2 mission, defended the toilet on the Orion spacecraft, which has been the subject of active discussions and criticism over the past two weeks. He assured that the toilet itself was functioning flawlessly, and the true cause of the malfunction lay in the ventilation line responsible for the disposal of liquid waste.

"I just want to say 100%: it was a great toilet. The toilet worked great," Wiseman said.

At a recent press conference, Wiseman explained in detail that the main mechanism of the toilet was performing its functions perfectly. However, the problem arose with a blockage in the system designed to remove urine. This led to the toilet being unable to be fully utilized for part of the 9-day mission.

NASA has yet to determine the exact root cause of this blockage. Initially, the space agency suggested that liquid waste might have simply frozen in the pipes, but this theory was not confirmed. Now, the leading hypothesis is a chemical reaction, possibly caused by special additives used to prevent biofilm formation.

Despite the difficulties encountered, Wiseman firmly believes that the engineers who developed this complex system deserve nothing but praise, not blame.

"I don’t want those great engineers who made this toilet to hang their heads low. It was great equipment," Wiseman said.

He emphasized that the Orion toilet represents a colossal advancement compared to the era of the Apollo missions, when astronauts had to manage without a stationary toilet, using only special bags.
