The Latvia National Team Loses to Sweden and Exits the 2026 Olympics

The Latvia national hockey team lost to the Sweden national team 1–5 (0–2, 1–1, 0–2) in the Olympic Games match for a place in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Edvards Tralmaks scored for the Latvia national team, who, by the way, celebrated his birthday on that day.

The Latvian hockey players looked quite respectable, but it is still too early for them to beat the Swedes.

Sweden will face the United States in the quarterfinals.

The Latvian hockey players started the Olympic tournament with a 1–5 loss to the United States, then defeated Germany 4–3, and in the decisive match for second place in the group and a more favorable opponent in the first round of the playoffs, lost to Denmark 2–4.

As a result, Latvia finished last in the group, in fourth place, and tenth overall, facing Sweden, which took seventh place.

The Swedes began the tournament with a tough 5–2 victory over Italy, then lost 1–4 to Finland, and finally triumphed over Slovakia 5–3. In the subgroup, the Sweden national team finished in third place.

At the Olympics, the Latvians have faced the Swedes three times and lost all matches, including in 2022, when the group stage game against Sweden was the most hard-fought — 2–3.

The Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo will last until February 22.
