Latvia's top-ranked player Alena Ostapenko ended her singles campaign at the Australian Open on Thursday, losing in the second round to Chinese tennis player Wang Xinyu with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 4-6, LETA reports.
Ostapenko is ranked 24th in the WTA rankings and was seeded at the tournament under the same number, while Wang is in 46th place.
After losing in the second round, Ostapenko finished the tournament with 70 ranking points.
The opponents had previously met twice. Last season, at the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, Wang won in straight sets in the second round.
In the first round, Ostapenko defeated Slovak Rebecca Šramková (WTA 73) with a score of 6-4, 6-4. The Chinese representative advanced past Ukrainian Angelina Kalinina (WTA 178), who came through qualifying, with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Ostapenko is participating in the Australian Open for the 11th time. Her best result in singles was reaching the quarterfinals in 2023. Last year, she was eliminated in the first round of the singles tournament, but for the second consecutive year, she reached the finals in doubles.
Wang Xinyu is participating in the season's first Grand Slam tournament for the eighth time. She had never previously advanced past the second round—she was eliminated in the first round in the last two tournaments.
Ostapenko is also competing in doubles, where she and Taiwanese player Hsieh Su-wei are seeded third. The Latvian-Taiwanese pair reached the second round, where they will face Serbian Olga Danilović and Austrian tennis player Anastasia Potapova.
As reported, last week, Anastasia Sevastova (WTA 186) failed to qualify for the Australian Open, and Latvia's second-ranked player Daria Semenistaya (WTA 98) lost to Czech Linda Nosková (WTA 13) on Monday with a score of 3-6, 0-6.
The winner of the women's singles at the Australian Open last year was American Madison Keys.
