British journalist Piers Morgan commented on the potential boycott of the 2026 World Cup by several European teams amid the policies of US President Donald Trump.
The tournament is set to take place in the summer of 2026 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The discussion was prompted by new tariffs announced by the Trump administration regarding European countries. Morgan expressed his views on this topic on social media, suggesting that leading football teams from the continent could use the World Cup as a leverage tool in negotiations.
"Perhaps England, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Norway, and Italy should suspend their participation in the World Cup while negotiations with President Trump regarding various tariffs are ongoing? The refusal of 8 out of 10 tournament favorites could make one think," Morgan wrote on social media platform X.
The new tariffs were announced by Trump on January 17, 2026. According to American plans, starting February 1, the USA will impose a 10% tariff on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. If no agreements are reached with European countries regarding the purchase of Greenland, the rate could rise to 25% starting June 1.
Earlier, German politician Jürgen Hardt, a member of the Bundestag and ally of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, also mentioned the possibility of a World Cup boycott. He suggested that the German national team might refuse to participate in the tournament due to the US president's stance on Greenland.
