Today’s morning will clearly go down in history for Latvia - at least in political history. Never before in the recent history of Latvia have there been cases of the detention of sitting ministers! Moreover, the top officials of Latvia (referring to the directors of the State Chancellery), if they ever became involved in criminal cases, did so only after being dismissed (or resigning), and no one was arrested!
Thus, Armand Krauze has become the first detained minister in the recent history. The Prime Minister, however, hastily moved to suspend him from office, but that changes nothing. If Krauze is released after giving testimony, meaning that his arrest is replaced with a travel ban, then theoretically he could resume his parliamentary mandate. But such a scenario is unlikely. It seems that his political career, if not over, is on pause. It is hardly likely that he will participate in the upcoming elections.
Here’s how the well-known political technologist Jurģis Liepnieks commented on the incident: "This is the first case in the history of Latvia where a minister has been detained and taken from his office accompanied by three individuals."
