Prime Minister Evika Siliņa ("New Unity") will make a statement for the media today at 10:30, the press secretary of the Cabinet of Ministers, Laura Krastiņa, informed the LETA agency.
The Prime Minister's press conference will be broadcast live on the websites of the Cabinet of Ministers and on its page on "Facebook."
As reported, the coalition party "Progressives" on Wednesday called on President Edgars Rinkēvičs to initiate consultations on forming a new government.
After a meeting with the Prime Minister, the leader of the "Progressives" faction in the Saeima, Andris Šuvajevs, stated that the meeting did not provide satisfactory answers, and the government has effectively lost its capacity to function. Šuvajevs believes that there are two options in this situation - the resignation of the Prime Minister or a vote of confidence in the Saeima regarding the government.
The faction leader urged the President to begin political consultations on forming a new government, emphasizing that the state needs a stable and capable executive power.
Šuvajevs noted that there are five months left until the elections, but even during this time, full and predictable government work is necessary, especially in preparing the state budget for the next year and making decisions in the field of security.
As reported, after the decision by Silin to dismiss the "Progressives" representative Minister of Defense Andris Sprūds, the party stated that the Prime Minister is unable to responsibly lead the government.
The decision to demand Sprūds' resignation was made by the Prime Minister after incidents involving drones in Latgale, pointing to a loss of trust in the minister and issues in the sector. In turn, Sprūds announced his resignation, taking political responsibility for the incidents and trying to prevent the armed forces from being drawn into political games.
There have been various disagreements among coalition partners for a long time, but they have managed to agree on continuing their work so far.
