It Happened! Silinā Has Left. What’s Next? 0

Эвика Силиня

The current government lasted almost 2 years and 8 months.

Just yesterday evening and early this morning, Evika Silinā, despite the pleas of her party colleagues, categorically refused to resign - apparently hoping for a miracle. Or that the 'progressives' would reconsider finishing off their own government, or that the opposition would not have enough votes to remove the prime minister.

But by around 9:30, it became clear that there were enough votes in parliament to remove the prime minister today and to send the entire government into resignation. And then Evika Silinā realized that... the game was over.

So, the resignation statement will now be sent by Silinā to the president and the presidium of the Saeima.

What’s next? Silinā's government will continue to operate until a new government is approved. It is obvious that 'forming a government with three parties' will not succeed - the National Alliance, the 'Green Farmers', and the United List will gather only 43 votes, while at least 51 are needed... If 'New Unity' refuses, the right will have to either approach the 'progressives' or ask to join the new coalition 'Latvia First'.
